firstly yes you can but your printer will probably notify you that a cartridge was removed and "has it been replaced with a new one?"(just click no)

Secondly....how are you going to tell if it's empty or not by looking at it? because I would definately not suggest shaking it to find out !!! the only way I can think of is to weigh it on a set of digital scales against the weight of a new FULL one.

No, this isn't anything to do with Pigment vs. Dye inks. It all depends on the ink. There are some really good aftermarket ink suppliers and some really crappy ones. Refill kits generally come with a very generic ink and it's going to fade fast. If you can get an ink that is specifically made for that cartridge from a reputable ink manufacturer then you should see little difference between that and a Brother brand ink.

If you are worried about how long your photo's will last and price just take your photo's to Wal-mart and have them print them. It will end up being cheaper and the quality will usually be better. Having somewhere print them off will almost always be cheaper than a Brand new manufacturer cartridge and if you have a good quality refill then you might get close in price but quality will be better with the photo place. Printing a couple of photo's off yourself isn't too bad but if you print them regularly just take them into somebody, you'll save more money that way.
References :
It probably won't hurt anything, but it's not really a good idea. Most printers have a software utility that will tell you approximately how much ink is left in the cartridges - check the manufacturer's website for more information.
References :
I think you are asking about the difference between pigment and dye ink. The two articles below should help.
